16 March National Vaccination Day OR National Immunization Day

Theme 2022 : “Vaccines Work for All”

This day which is also known as National Immunisation Day is celebrated on March 16 to mark India’s victory against the disease, polio.

The day is observed to celebrate the Indian government’s Pulse Polio Campaign which was an initiative to eradicate polio from the country.

On this day, the first dose of Oral Polio Vaccine was given in India in 1995.

In 2014 India became a Polio free country.

Jonas Edward Salk : developed one of the first successful polio vaccines.

First oral polio vaccine (OPV) developed by Dr. Albert Sabin and first used in 1961.
